Do you love the taste of Portugese sweet bread? If so, you’ll love this simple recipe for how to make sweet bread buns that are subtly sweet in flavor and soft and tender in texture.

Tasty Sweet Bread Recipe

Naturally our kids absolutely love this sweet bread recipe because of the sweet, dessert-like taste. They even enjoy slathering on a layer of Nutella spread over top to sweeten the flavoring a tad bit more. I can’t say I blame them, although personally, I enjoy spreading soft butter over the warm, freshly baked and mildly sweet buns.

Inspired by the classic Portugese sweet bread and made with a mix of mostly flour, eggs, milk and sugar; these sweet bread buns are great alternative to any meal. We especially love to make these sweet buns along side our pulled pork and for any outdoor BBQ dishes such as our chicken shish kabobs and our grilled pork shoulder.

How to Make Sweet Bread Buns

Combine 2 tsp yeast, 1 tsp sugar to ½ cup warm water. Let the yeast mixture sit while preparing the dough.

Using a Stand Mixer with the dough attachment, combine flour, sugar, eggs, salt, melted butter and warm milk.

Add yeast mixture to dough mixture and continue mixing until well blended, approximately 10 minutes.

Remove dough from the mixing bowl and place on a floured surface.

Knead by hand for 3 minutes. The longer you mix, the better the dough will turn out. The dough will have a slightly sticky feel so continue to add flour to your hands and the surface as you knead.

Place dough in a large greased bowl and cover with a paper towel. Leave the dough to rise to double its size, approximately 1 to 1.5 hours.

Remove the dough and equally divide into buns, placing them in a greased muffin tray.

Cover and let the dough rise for another ½ hour. In the meantime, preheat the oven to 350F.

Beat 1 tsp sugar and 1 egg together and generously brush the egg mixture over top of the buns.
