What is French Onion Soup?
French onion soup is a classic dish made with caramelized onions, beef or vegetable broth, and often topped with a layer of melted cheese and a slice of toasted bread. The soup has a rich, savory flavor from the slowly cooked onions, which develop sweetness as they caramelize.
It’s traditionally served as a comforting, hearty dish, with the cheese melted over the bread forming a golden, bubbly crust. The combination of sweet onions, flavorful broth, and gooey cheese makes it a popular, satisfying meal, especially during colder months.
