tasty homestyle beef goulash

There’s nothing quite like a big bowl of warm beef goulash. This hearty and healthy recipe is perfect for the entire family.

I’m definitely a lover of goulash. OK so it may not be the sexiest thing to admit but I really do like it. They’re rich flavors of the tomato-based soup along with soft chunks of beef and potatoes make this main dish one of my absolute favorites.

Especially when enjoyed alongside some fresh homemade white bread or served with pasta, polenta, cornmeal, or even simple creamy mashed potatoes.

While we preferred to make this goulash with beef you could also be made with pork or mixed half-and-half. Also this recipe makes a generous amount of goulash which actually tastes even better the next day. Or partition into several containers and place into the freezer for several weeks.

Ingredients Needed to Make Beef Goulash

  • 2-3 lbs beef, cubed
  • 3 cup oinoins, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • 2-3 bay leaves
  • salt and pepper
  • 3 tbsps butter/oil
  • 1 can tomato paste
  • 5 cups water

How to Cook Delicious Beef Goulash

Cook meat 3-5 minutes in a fry pan to drain and discard the juices.

In a large pot saute onions for 3-4 minutes. Add meat and other ingredients and then saute for about 10-15 minutes.

In the meantime, dilute 1 can of tomato paste with 5 cups of water. Add to the sauteed mixture.

Cover and simmer on low heat 1-½ hours until meet is tender.

You’re aiming for a thick gravy consistency. If goulash is too runny, mix 1-2 tbsp of flour with cold water (or tomato juice) and add to the goulash to thicken.

Alternative Cooking Method: Using a Slow Cooker

Instead of the stove-top, you could place the sauteed ingredients and water in a slow cooker for 5-6 hours.
