Take your salads up a notch with this beautifully and wonderfully easy to make iceburg wedge salad recipe idea using a flavorful homemade blue cheese dressing.

Iceburg & Blue Cheese Wedge Salad

The beauty of this iceburg wedge salad is partly in that it can loaded up as much (or as little) as you want with a flavorful homemade blue cheese dressing and delicious garnish. It’s an impressive looking salad although it requires very little effort; which is the other beauty in it. We love that this type of salad can be conveniently made throughout the week adding a little variety to our family’s weekday meals.

Since the dressing stores well in the fridge for several days, the blue cheese dressing can even be prepared ahead of time to cut down the prep time further. We use our homemade apple cider vinegar in the dressing, so be sure to check out our mom’s traditional vinegar recipe to make your own from scratch.

For the Wedge Salad:

  • 1 head iceberg lettuce, quartered
  • 4 slices bacon, chopped
  • 2-4 tbsp green onions, optional garnish
  • Blue cheese dressing, as needed (see below for how to make homemade blue cheese dressing)
  • 1/4 cup blue cheese crumbles, for garnish

To Make a Blue Cheese Dressing:

  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 teaspoon coarse salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar (to make your own homemade vinegar)
  • 1 oz blue cheese crumbles
Ingredients in bowls that are needed to make Iceburg wedge salad.

How to Make an Iceburg Wedge Salad:

Preparing the Dressing

In a large bowl, beat together all of the blue cheese dressing ingredients. Taste and adjust to your personal preferences.

Cooking Tip: You can either mix the blue cheese dressing in a bowl by hand, or combine in a smoothie-style blender.

  • Adding spices to the blue cheese ingredients.
  • Mixing blue cheese ingredients in a bowl.

Preparing the Wedge Salad:

Cut the iceberg lettuce into 4 quarters, lengthwise. Rince each wedge under water to wash and pat dry with a paper towel before placing the wedges on your serving plates.

Spoon 2 to 4 tablespoons of the blue cheese dressing onto each lettuce wedge, as desired.

Pouring blue cheese dressing over the Iceburg lettuce wedge.

Next, sprinkle on the chopped bacon, green onions and blue cheese crumbs.

Adding bacon, green onion and blue cheese crumble to the iceburg wedge.

As with most fresh lettuce salads, serve and enjoy these dishes immediately after preparing.
