Homemade Sour Cherry Strudel Recipe

Ingredients

Dough

  • 3.5 cups flour all purpose Robin Hood preferred
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3 tbsp vegetable oil or canola + 2 tbsp oil
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup warm water + 2 tbsp

Filling

  • 3 cups sour cherries pitted
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • ½ cup crushed digestive cookies any dried cookies (or use bread crumbs - but need more sugar if not using cookies

Instructions

  • Place pitted cherries in a frying pan and cook over medium heat for 10 minutes. Add sugar and mix, continue sauteeing for 5 minutes. Stir occasionally. Strain the cooked cherries for 20 minutes to reduce excess juices. Some juices ok but not a lot.
  • Sprinkle crushed cookies (or bread crumbs) over top of butter dough.
  • Spread the filling over the top of the dough, on the side closest to you, about ¼ of the pastry covered.
  • Begin to roll pastry into a long tube starting with the side that has the cherry filling on top. Continue rolling until the entire pastry is wrapped.
  • Transfer to lightly greased pan.
  • Bake 390F for 23 minutes and check if golden color.
