Equipment

  • Baking Sheet, standard size cookie sheet
  • Stand mixer with dough hook
  • aluminum foil
  • Parchment Paper

Ingredients

  • 6 cups all-purpose flour, unbleached
  • 1.5 cup warm milk divided
  • 1 tbsp yeast
  • 2 tsp powdered sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ cup melted butter or margarine
  • ½ cup vegetable oil or canola
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tbsp seasame seeds optional

Instructions

  • Combine yeast mixture (1 cup warm milk, yeast and powdered sugar) in a small cup. Let is sit while you prepare the wet and dry ingredients.
  • Combine wet ingredients (eggs, melted butter, oil and remaining 1/2 cup warm milk) in a large mixing bowl.
  • Add flour and salt to the wet ingredients.
  • Add the yeast mixture.
  • Mix all ingredients together in KitchenAid until well combined, about 8-10 minutes.
  • Leave dough in bowl and cover with a dish cloth. Let it rise to about double its size (about ½ hour to 1 hour).
  • Wet your hands and break apart the dough in to a ball about the size of a large egg. Knead it with your hands until it forms a smooth shape. Make even and place into baking pan.
  • Place it on the baking sheet at the top of the tree. Working one row at a time, continue making dough balls and placing them in to the pan until a tree shape is formed.
  • When in pan, mix 1 egg yolk and brush over top of dough.
  • Can add sesame seeds or sea salt over top as an optional ingredient.
  • Bake 380F for 30 minutes.
