A Delicious Apple Cinnamon Bun Recipe

It was only recently that I realized how easy it is to make cinnamon buns from scratch at home. To me, cinnamon buns were always reserved for store bought treats. And although I enjoyed the indulgence, I have always found them a bit too sugary and sweet.

That is, until my mother perfected her cinnamon bun recipe! Adding chopped apples, gives the cinnamon buns a nice texture while cutting down on the sweetness. And as an added option, extra ingredients such raisins, seeds and/or nuts can also be included. This recipe can be adjusted to your liking…I personally leave out raisins since my husband’s not a fan of them.

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, we placed our cinnamon buns to bake in a heart shaped pan, but any standard shaped pan will do. Wouldn’t a warm, freshly baked apple cinnamon buns be a thoughtful gift for your sweetheart?

Ingredients

Dough:

  • ¾ cup warm milk
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 pack vanilla sugar
  • 2 tbsp instant quick-rise yeast
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 1 cup milk (or water)
  • 3 cups flour
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 egg

Filling:

  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 cup chopped apples (baking apples such as mutsu or cortland apples)
  • 3 tbsp brown sugar
  • 3 tbsp melted butter
  • ¼ cup raisins (optional)
  • ⅛ cup of pumpkin seeds or walnuts or sunflower seeds (optional)

Glaze/Frosting

  • 2 cups confectioner’s sugar
  • 2 tsp or tbsp milk
  • 3 tbsp soft butter
  • 2 tsp vanilla sugar

Instructions

Mix together the warm milk, sugars and yeast in a small mixing bowl.
Mix together flour, salt and egg in a separate large mixing bowl.

Combine both mixtures together using a blender.
Add 1 cup milk (or water) and mix until you get a pizza dough consistency (for 7-10 minutes).
Let dough sit for 10 minutes covered then roll out flat on a floured surface.

In the meantime, prepare filling.
Mix apples, brown sugar and butter in small bowl.

Grease pan 9×9.
Begin rolling prepared dough widthwise tightly while stretching the dough out lengthwise gently.

Cut 3-4” thick pieces along the entire length of the rolled dough and place one piece at a time into prepared pan.

Allow the dough to sit in the pan for 10 minutes while covered.

Bake at 375F for 30 minutes or when the top of the buns look golden brown.

In the meantime, prepare the glaze by mixing the sugars, butter and milk until smooth.
Remove from oven and let cool before spreading the glaze over top with a spatula.

In my family, the glaze is truly the “icing on the cake” so to speak, in other words, the more the better. While for the rest of us, we prefer only a thin layer of glaze or even none at all. As they say, to each their own.

The idea of using yeast, and having to wait for it to rise, and such is very intimidating to me. You guys make it look so easy to make the cinnamon rolls though! Pinning to try.

I thought the same until I starting using yeast for making bread dough, and then I wondered why I had waited so long to try, LOL. Hope you enjoy the cinna buns, Alexandra!
